Cumberland County District Judge Cheri Beasley Files for NC Court of Appeals
Wednesday, 13 February 2008
FAYETTEVILLE—Cumberland County District Court Judge Cheri Beasley filed Monday for the NC Court of Appeals seat held by J. Douglas McCullough.
Judge Beasley officially launched her statewide campaign on January 9th and is excited to continue her travels across the state "I am both energized and humbled with the opportunity to work every day to garner support from every voter in North Carolina."
Judge Beasley said her diverse courtroom experience both on the District Court bench and as a former Public Defender give her a unique perspective to serving on the State Court of Appeals. "We need judges on our appellate court who have trial court experience, especially with family court cases which are increasingly coming before the State Court of Appeals."
Judge Beasley served five years as a public defender in Fayetteville before being appointed to the bench in 1999 by Gov. Jim Hunt. Following her appointment she won re-election to the court in 2002 and is now serving her second term following an uncontested race in 2006.
"In my courtroom I see the faces of those impacted by the decisions made in our judicial system. I see the victims of crime, I see the victims of domestic violence, I see the business owners, I see the voiceless, I see those who need an advocate and welcome the challenge of giving them a voice."
Beasley said she will participate in the public financing program for appellate judges. The office is a non-partisan election.
